University Ranking takes into account the tangibles like research papers, facilities, faculty etc.  It cannot take into account how much a student improves via sports.  Especially on a winning sports program.  An example is the Sooner Softball program at the University of Oklahoma.  Most students at a College do not participate, but the ones that do, reap the benefits of their athletic endeavors.
